...and Culture. In the church of Santa Maria Maggiore,
where responsible tourists plant themselves in front of
a fresco cycle by Pinturicchio, we found this interesting
little number to the right of the altar. Was it a sanctified
version of St. Dorothy in the Tornado, we wondered? No,
it represents the angels who flew down to the Holy Land
and plucked Mary’s house (where boy Jesus grew up)
from the grasp of Islam and flew it for safekeeping, first
to Dalmatia, then to Loreto in Italy. That was in 1263,
folks. Where’s them angels when you need ‘em?
