January 2005. Botany Bay. Captain Cook, accompanied by Sir Joseph Banks, landed here in April, 1770 and claimed the "Great Southern Land" for King George III. In 1788, Captain Phillip arrived with the first transports to found the new penal colony, but rejected Botany Bay in favor of Port Jackson (where Sydney is located). |
